First of my many dumb posts after having just joined the forum, so please bear with me and excuse my ignorance :)

My main gearbox letting go a couple of weeks ago(shortly after having bought the Landy, grrrrr!). It had seized due to no oil so is being rebuilt. The transfer box is OK apart from a small leak so is having new seals.

My question is whether this would be the opportune time to raise the ratio for easier motorway cruising speed as everything's in bits at the moment. I'm aware that a Discovery transfer box does this(?) but the transfer box on mine is the one part that is working OK so might just be a huge expense replacing something that's functioning well right now and do this mod at a later date when my finances have recovered.

Just trying to get a clue on what my options would be and get anyone's thoughts. Hope this all makes sense.

Thanks in advance guys.

Cheers, Hilton.

Hi Hilton,

Really the easiest way would be as you have read up, to change the tbox. Plenty out there, it is a std item if it ever goes wrong.

Cheers

as banks has said just replace the 5th gear been as your going for a rebuild will give you best of both worlds low gearing for pull away and towing and higher 5th for cruising
