Just complete a 200 mile round trip in cold (very fecking cold!!) conditions.....would a radiator muff increase the heater temp.....or just get it luke warmer quicker?

Where does yer needle show on yer temp gauge at present? My Rad muff is helping keep my TD5 nice and toastie. Especially when on tickover. I don't like leaving it fully closed though unless I have my diagnostic plugged in.

where on the temp gauge should the needle sit, as it sits at about 80 on my 200 tdi but when i put a rad muff on it went up to 100 not in the red but it did make me worrie. as when i stopped i could see steam coming from under the bonnet

about 82 is when the thermostat should open.

Did you have the muff fully closed? It might be worth you experimenting with it in various positions. Remember that even when fully open a rad muff blocks some of the grill.

I can get away with mine fully closed in minus temps but if I was to climb a long steep hill I have known my landy to get to 97 degs. If I'm going on a long drive in hte cold I'll have it half closed. If I'm doing a lot of stop start or sitting around I have it fully closed.

yes it was fully closed so maybe i should try it open it dosnt seem to of done the landy any harm as it seems to run the same as normal now. thanks for the reply at least i know what im looking at:doh:

My needle sits bang centre on the gauge but even with no fan and the rad fully muffed on a good long drive the heater is pathetic. I'm thinking that my stat is open all the time and in these temps my engine never gets to proper working temp. At idle the needle drops off to just above the blue section on the gauge and refuses to budge.
Funny thing is that even after a good long blast the bottom hose is icy cold even with the rad muffed and the temp gauge at normal ???

My needle drops to just above the blue at tickover (57 degs C) anorl. I closed the muff today while on tickover and watched the temp creep up slowly. I didn't get a chance to see what temp it would get to cos my belly was rumbling and the chippy was about to open. I'll see what it stays at tomorrow when parked up on tickover.

My bottom hose is warm, not icy cold. Like you say, It might be time for you to try a new stat. It could be that your bypass valve has gone weak and so is opening too early.

think yer self lucky both the td5's i've had dont go above what i can only discribe as 11o'clock (i have the viscos fan on still).
the last 4 days have hade 95% of the radiator grill with cooking foil and it has not altered it more than a millimetre or so (it does run up to temp much quicker though which is a bonus this weather :D)
 
Had the same problem with my landy, until today.
Went round me dads and we took out the heater box and drill out the rivets to remove heater matrix. It was clogged with loads of crap se I ran hot water through it and gave it a good shake, loads of crap came out!

We the got some new foam, a camping mat is what we used, and re insulated the heater box and re fitted it.
Nice and warm now.:)

Not a hard job, does need 2 of you though as the bolts on the bottom of the heater box need someone inside holding the spanner whilst you undo the bolts from engine bay.
 
Refurbed me heater a few weeks ago- now toasty...
Until this snow came.
I also fitted a digi water temp gauge too- cos I couldn't get the old one to work proper.
It still fits in the cyl head.
Usually the temps sits nicely about 80, forgot to mention i removed the viscous ****e fan & fitted a Mondeo leccy fan.
Now the weather is feckin freezin I hardly get much above 65, max I ever had is 70 even towing the sankey....

This does have an effect on the heater output.
I was gonna make a cheapo radmuff but got a bargain on fleabay for a proper one so will report back when fitted in a few days :)

Yer old 90 was getting up to 90 degs ok last time I plugged it in.;) 11 o'clock is the normal position on my 110. (just and just below the centre mark).

My 110 was struggling to get above 57 degs C on tickover today and 81 degs C when driving and that was with the muff fully closed and the outside temp at -5 degs C. I had to resort to leaning over and pressing the on button on my ceramic heater.:p
 
I'm gonna pull the heater box out and make sure its not full of dead flies and the like tomorrow. The flow and return pipes to the matrix are hot enough to the touch that I should be getting more heat out of the thing than I am.
I'll change out the stat while I'm at it as it looks like it may be the original fitted in 1998 and let you know if it makes any difference.

I really need to get this sorted before our family expedition to Exmoor in February or I'll have both the missus and the kids moaning all day long. Maybe I'll just go myself and forget the heating :)

What ceramic heater are you using Ratty and is it any good?

I have the pacet version of this..

12v 300w PTC Heater by Roadpro, Ceramic c/w Swivel base on eBay (end time 02-Jan-11 22:49:15 GMT)

It's nowhere near as good as a eberspacher or webasto but it does make a big difference when your landy is feezing cold. I think it's probably the best of the ceramic heaters. I usually use it when first getting in with a frosted up windscreen. It cleared the screen better on my previous 110 but as it's mounted on the bulkhead behind the second row seats on my current landy I can't really blame it for taking a lot longer. I tend to use it on low until the element has warmed up and then whack it right up once it's warmed up. If I've been sat static in cold weather for a long time and my heater is blowing out tepid air I find that flicking it on and jumping back in the landy 5 to 10 mins later and my landy is toastie warm again. I wouldn't pay £80 for it though. I think I got mine for about £25-£30. I've had it for around 5 years.
