heya guys been searchin this for the the last hoir now and am just gettin confused!!..... ive just blown up the 200tdi engine in my defender (200tdi conversion) ive gotten hold of a another 200tdi engine gearbox and transfer box all together in great condition from a rotten disco..... my question is will it fit straight swap into my defender or am i better off just usein the engine and sellin the gearbox and transfer box?

cheers chris

Discovery gearboxes have the gear lever in a different position which is not ideal in a Defender. There may be kits available to put in a Defender style gear lever but I am not sure where you can get them and how much work is involved in adapting them.

Also, if the new engine and gearbox both came from a 200tdi Discovery then I believe the gearbox will be an LT77 (not an R380 which was fitted to the 300 tdi). If I am wrong then I am sure someone will be along shortly to correct me.

If your engine was a transplanted Discovery 200Tdi then just get another Discovery 200Tdi. It will bolt straight in. If your engine was a Defender 200Tdi then it's a little more tricky.

I believe that very very late 200Tdi Discovery's may have had an R380 but generally all were LT77.

Got any pics of your current engine?

its a disco tdi already in there, i will just swap the engines over if swappin the gear box aswell isngoin to be a trauma... i was just wonderin if disco gear box would fit easily cus my current lt77 has seen better days and i hear r380's are nicer box's aswell??? also figure ill have it all apart and a spare box layin around. the guy ill be buyin it from has said its a r380 but im not actualy sure.... how would i tell by lookin at it? bit more research and aparently you can buy a conversion kit from ashcrofts to for the gear stick anyone with any experience fitting this?

Again, you might already have a Discovery gearbox in there, it is a possibility. Post up some pics of the engine bay and the gearbox and gearsticks, people on here will know what you have.

The R380 has reverse under 5th, the LT77 has reverse to the left of 1st. That is one way to tell. It's not quite so easy to explain the differences in how they look though.

You can get a short R380 for a Defender, but these are pretty rare and the cost reflects this. The conversion from Ashcroft will do the business but you need the stick linkage off a Defender box too (which you should already have if your gearbox is a Defender one). If you do fit a Discovery gearbox, the bellhousing is longer so you will need to move the engine forward, then pipes need to be made up, stuff re-routed etc etc.

im sure ive got a disco 200tdi and original lt77 in at the moment. i was realy just wonderin how much of hassle it would be to stick disco gear box in while i had it.....

here but its soundin like a lota hassle for minimum gain so ill probly just use the engine and sell the gearbox on i think.. thanks to everyone for the help and information.

depends how handy you are, if you have an air compressor with an impact gun not long at all and a puller too

The Disc R380 has a shorter bellhousing and a longer box than Disco LT77 if you want to measure it to find out which it is:)

cheers thats pretty handy to know :) am i right though doesmt matter wich one it is its not gona fot my defender without bellhouseimg swap and buyin and fittin the gear stick adapter
