Hi - I've got a a 4.0 litre 1999 Rangie which tells me that I've got
1 Traction Control failure
2 ABS failure
This happens fairly often but not at any particular time. Thing is though, both Trac Control and ABS are apparently working fine!
If it were a computer, I'd re-boot it - anyone out there have any suggestions other that taking it to the local dealers to get ripped off.

Morning mate, now I am no expert by any means but I do know that mine 2004 had a smiliar problem and it was simply down to a flat battery. My battery had drained whilst on holiday because I had left the TV on. Once I jumped started it the LandRover recovery guy said I would get a number of odd failures untill I put it into the dealers to be trickle charged over night. Might be the reason.

Im sure others will confirm or deny!!!

abs and trac control are linked, they are bith part of the braking system, if everything else works ok i would look at brake system, check fluid level forst and maybe bleed brakes, then it could be abs pump????

Dont worry too much,sounds like your battery voltage is dipping slightly too low on start up,the autobox and ABS ecu's see the low voltage on boot up and chuck a paddy.Check out the battery/alternator.

I've not had a flat battery but iI'll check start-up voltage as you suggest, eightinavee, since it's the lo-cost solution.
Also, gavbriggs, I'll check out brake system just in case.
Both trac & ABS systems are actually working fine, the problem does seem more common when starting from cold so start-up voltage seems a likely suspect.

Hi
Take your wheels off and make shure that the abs sensors are pushed into the holding brackets correctly and that there isnt anything stuck between them and the ring on the hub. If none of this works it will need to have the codes read, (it may well be a faulty abs sensor but which one?) as this and incorrect sensor gaps create exactly what you have described.

Thanks for that, the false messages are not consistent but do seem to be associated with cold or near cold starts so it may be voltage drop as suggested by eightinavee. I'll have the wheels off for brake check during 108K mile service so I'll check out sensors as you suggest.
