Im sure it's been discussed before but again I'm struggling to find it.

Been in two 300tdis within the past few weeks, one a 95 with 50k and the one I bought, 97 with 80k. Mine seems a bit rougher and noisier and not as smooth.

Mine has more in the way of carpets.

Are there any aftermarket softer engine mounts to address the issue?

Any ideas on where to start on building a daily quiet run would be much appreciated.

You being the dick expert? Il stick to my quiet 110 ta. I know a mate who knows a mate who might sort you out if your struggling for fresh dick!!
 
Significantly quietening a Defender is a hard one, and because they almost all leak, anything like carpet that absorbs and holds water is a nightmare!

What Landy you got? Panel vans can be quietened a little by insulating the rear tub (sides, roof).

There's not a lot between you and the engine/drive train - don't know what can be achieved by fitting sound deadening materials on the tunnel box, bulkhead etc.

Not the answer you want, but they are just noisy. Maybe a Disco would have been a better choice as a daily drive?
 
Thanks for the response, iv had a 200tdi 90 td5 110 and this 300tdi csw. Not overly fussed with the noise, it's just the comparable difference in the two very similar vehicles. Td5 was obviously the quietest but never felt as faithful.
 
Ok, here's my very quick and short guide to soundproofing a Defender.

You need:

i) Evostick Flashband
ii) Camping mats
iii) This: Sound deadening mat kit Landrover Defender Series 1 2 3 | eBay
iv) Some camping mats
v) carpet set

You need to do the following:

i) Stick Flashband on metal panels. Stops them drumming. (you don't actually need to cover the whole panels, you can experiment and see what works)
ii) Stick camping mats over this. I doubled-up the camping mats in the footwells and on the bulkhead.
iii) Put that sound deadening stuff from Ebay on the underside of your bonnet, and get some on your bulkhead if you're able to.
iv) Fit/replace carpet set to cover up the fact that your Defender now looks like Millets.
v) Bask in the fact that you've now got a slightly quieter Land Rover than before.

I also got an acoustic engine cover off Ebay for £20. I think they were fitted as standard on most tdi Defenders, but mine had lost it's cover at some point in its life. This didn't necessarily make the engine much quieter, but did take away some of the annoying rattles.

The improvements are noticeable but it's not as quiet as a 'normal' car. At low speed you can still hear the engine, but at motorway speeds most of the noise is wind noise, which I have no idea how to reduce. The downside is that now that the engine noise is reduced, I can hear the transmission whining away much more.
 
To kill the wind noise, line all the doors up properly and make sure there are no draughts. There's a hell of a racket if that is not the case.

My 90 has a layer of FatMat Rattletrap soundproofing on the bulkhead, floor plates, transmission tunnel, seat box, and rear wheel boxes. It then has the standard L/R soundproofing and CSW carpet trims, and some extra carpet in areas that don't have it as standard. Rear panels (it's a hard-top) are trimmed with carpet-covered ply with 25mm polystyrene behind them. Rear wheel-boxes have carpet over the FatMat, rear floor has a thick rubber mat (stable mat type stuff) over carpet. Roof is trimmed with a layer of foil-backed camping matting, and then a genuine full-length headlining over the top. Full CSW trim at the rear round the quarter-lights as well.

Suffice to say that it's pretty quiet for a 200Tdi, certainly a lot quieter than the Td5 90 HT I drive at work. Damn warm as well with all that extra insulation!

Non-aggresive tyres help a lot too, probably half the noise I do still get is road noise, unless I go above 55-60mph at which point the engine is quite audible! Not oppressive like it used to be, but certainly louder than normal vehicles. Exhaust is quite loud too, needs some work to make it quieter I think.
 
Thanks for the intellectual responses. They are things I will look at. Comparing both vehicles which have a similar level of sound proofing, based on the refurbed on being quieter I'm going to go down the replace and renew of mechanicals I.e shafts uj's engine mount and see what they will do.
The g and t box seem fine but il have em checked. The money saved on not getting ripped off by the fore mentioned seller will certainly stretch to it. are there any aftermarket engine mounts that are comparable to a td5?
 
if you wanted quiet you should have bought a bmw x5 or similar,you bought a tratter,live with it and enjoy it :D
