The P38 is rated to tow 3.5 tonnes and can actually do 5 tonnes where the law allows, so a series should be a breeze. Don't forget to lock the air suspension when towing per the owners manual.
The diesel auto is a good tow car.

Thanks guys, it's hypothetical atm of course but it would need tow one at some point so I need to know. The concern was purely because of the comments I keep reading on LZ about the Diesel P38's being gutless - as I've said before this is news to me as my previous one had plenty of poke for a large luxury saloon! Thanks again ;)

They just have a strange throttle response, all the go is in the last bit of pedal movement.
I tow a 1.9 tonne digger which with the trailer weight comes in at about 2.5 tonnes all up and it goes fine.:)

there was someone a few weeks back on a thead about the channel tunnel (cant find it now)posted a pic of a p38 hitched to a huge boat that had got to be 5 tonne

If he got across the channel towing 5 tonne, he wouldn't have got far, they are pretty hot on overweight trailers over here, they would not even have allowed him to turn round and get back on the ferry. Loads of caravans stopped every year:)

found it

Just give Eurotunnel a ring you wont have a problem, I have taken the boat on a couple of times, its over 12ft high and the overall length of car and boat is close to 50ft  We go on the standard high vehicle trains not the freight ones.
