Is there a Defender model which is maintainable by a competent DIYer and doesn't contain any onboard computer type stuff?

Anything else electrical or mechanical I have no problem with.

yes! Any of them up to and including the 300TDi. Not a TD5 or a new transit drevied one.

yes, nearly all of them! if you want a defender get a 200/300tdi (early if its a 300)
Any Series or a disco 200tdi. depends on your budget.

I was considering a 110 CSW or double cab, budget around £5k.

sounds gd to me, for that price you will get a goodun if you look round, youll probably get an excellent'un!

Where/what is gonna be used for?
