i am buying a new freelander 2 but it only comes with a tyre repair system rather than a spare wheel. anyone know if these systems work

no, they don't.
It'll leave you stranded beside the motorway at 2am in the ****in rain.

get a proper spare, or at least join the RAC.

depends on what type of hole you have sir. simple nail through the middle of the tread, i'll give you 50/50 chances. anything bigger, or in a sidewall and it's the long walk of shame for you. if land rover are so confident it'll work, why don't they give you the salesmans home phone number in case you have a problem ?
I'd see if you could get a cheap steel rim and tyre of the correct size to keep in the boot

Be aware that some of the breakdown recovery insurance policies have small-print that says you must carry a servicable spare wheel with you.

A friend of mine has a Smart For-Two which doesn't have a spare wheel (it'd need two for the different sized front and rears anyway) and when he got a puncture and called them out they charged him a fee for "accident recovery" because he didn't have a spare wheel with him.

I think it was the AA that he was with at the time.

HTH :)
