My puma Defender Puma 2.2 work truck is playing up. Loss of power into limp mode.
I replaced the turbo last year and the hoses are replacement silicone. Just checked the hoses. They look ok. Read that the vcv may cause problems. Or fuel pump!! It’s the air whooshing noise that’s part of the problem. The air noise is heard on acceleration. Any ideas!! Thanks

Almost certainly an air leak in the intercooler. The ally centre part separates from the plastic end boxes. Common problem. Take the front grille off and fan cowls from under the bonnet and look at the metal tangs which connect to the end boxes.

Took intercooler off and did a home/garage pressure test and it seemed ok although the test pressure was quite low.
Now goes into limp at 50 mph@2000 + revs. Still can hear the pressure whooshing noise. Replaced turbo 2 yrs ago. Could it be knackerd? again.?

Might have to try a bit higher test pressure. Mine (when it failed) would get up to about 50 mph then go into limp mode. The split in the intercooler would open at about 2000rpm then let go. And then the split would close again and start all over again. Once I located the leak, I did a temporary seal with some sealant while I waited for delivery of a replacement intercooler.

Changed Intercooler and Thermostat. Just took it out and still no power and limp mode @ 1500-2000 revs. ☹️.

Could be a fault in the variable vane mechanism on the turbo charger. If you can get the fault codes read using a diagnostic tool it will narrow the possibilities down. I have the code lists if you can get the readings recorded.

Update..I had the codes read and it brought up maf sensor. PO101. PO130 02 sensor circuit Bank. (Oil degradation & glow plug code came up on one check). Can the sensor cause all this fuss?? Can it be tested? Still at a loss. Cheers

You could try a new MAF sensor but I suspect the present one is doing its job and sensing a boost fault. If you get a new one, get a Ford one (the Puma engine is a Ford and originally fitted with ford sensors). Ford Part number is 8V21 12B579 AA. An original item will have FoMoCo printed on it, along with the part number. Should cost about £30. If you get one from a Land Rover dealer in a Land Rover box, it will probably be the ford item but cost about £100 more and is part number LR 019830. DO NOT GET the one for the 2.4 puma, it is different. But as I said earlier, yours is probably ok.
There are several P0130 codes related to the Heated Oxygen Sensor. A generic code reader will not get the second part of the code, so makes narrowing the problem down more difficult. Inspect and see if there is any obvious damage to the sensor or the cable going onto it.
As you are getting a whooshing noise this makes me think you do have a boost problem and the sensors are probably doing their jobs. Have you checked the condition of the air filter, and the duct from the offside wing to the air filter for blockages? And inspect the cable to the MAF sensor where it plugs into the sensor for damage. Also remove the sensor and inspect for cleanliness. (It is located at the outlet end of the air filter housing and takes about 30 seconds to remove a couple of screws to remove it). If these inspections check out ok I would be looking at the turbo variable vane mechanism next. It might be gummed up and stuck in one position?

It might also be worth investigating the EGR valve. It could be gummed up and stuck open? I have no personal experience in this area, but it could be related to the O2 sensor issue? And could be the source of the whooshing noise.

Thanks for your help Wimblow. Really appreciate it.
I think we have found the problem. The little hard to get hose attached to the inlet manifold had a big split in it. Resting/expanding on an engine mount bolt head. ?? Missing a cover plate? I’ve got a feeling this isn’t the end of it tho…now off to get a new pipe.

Do you sort it?
