Hi, I’m having problems with my 2009 defender:
When I switch the engine off something continues to tick/spin for about 5 seconds. I can now hear this ticking and a similar “squealing” noise when I turn the engine on and also when I shift down gears.
My mechanic seems to think that it’s the flywheel that needs changing and that this continues to spin hence the noise, but as this is a big job I don’t want him to start dismantling until I have a clear diagnosis.
It’s only done 40K km therefore I am also wondering whether this is a defect which could be fixed under warranty … Any ideas would be very much appreciated as it pains my heart to hear her suffer! :(

Thanks Rob

Get your head under the bellhousing, then get someone to switch it off and see if it sounds like the clutch area.

My guess would be its the clutch pressure plate springs rattling.

Does the noise occur at idle with the engine running? If so does it stop when the clutch pedal is pressed?

DMFs clatter more than squeal or tick. Make sure its not the turbo. But yer you need someone to stick their head in the engine bay to try and localise it.

Hey rob1979,
sounds alot like my 08 110, an odd eek eek eek noise when you turn off even tho the engines come to a complete stop! also like you say during gear changes, well it turned out to be the EGR valve on the exhaust manifold. The new bit cost just under £100 which is'nt to bad i guess but you dont expect that with only 38000 on the clock! Hope this is some use or at least a pointer in the right direction:D

It's the EGR self-cleaning.
It's normal.

agree, when you stop hearing the 5-7 clacking noises you have a problem, though if you stop and start the engine a number of times the cleaning cycle will sort it out, did with mine
