The rearmost propshaft UJ on my 1990 is knackered. I've been looking in a
couple of online catalogues and it seems that it's only possible to replace
this by replacing the entire rear propshaft assembly. This seems like an
extortionate expense just to replace a single UJ.

Is this true, or am I missing something?

If it is true, is there a rational reason for this?

You can replace the Uj's easily enough with 2 sockets, and a large vice.

They come with new circlips too. If you dont break the old ones getting
them out, they will ping across the room never to be found again.

Just look underneath at the round bearing cups pressed into the yokes, are
there circlips holding them in? , if so you will be able to replace them but
not without special equipment if they are the 'staked' variety, i.e. no
circlips but press marks on the edges to hold them in. I've not seen any
like that though on Landrovers.

On my 110 the UJ can be replaced by buying a new spider (or whatever
it's called) and replacing the one that's already in there, but part
of the UJ is a moulding on the propshaft itself so if that's knackered
then you'd need to replace the propshaft.

What you need to do is to tell us what's knackered, as the UJ comes in
3 main bits, the prop shaft bit, the spider with the bearings and the
drive flange. The spider/bearings is a service item and is cheap and
readily replaceable, the drive flange is also readily replaceable,
it's only the propshaft part that might cause a problem but if you
need to replace that then you'd have to be very unlucky indeed!

Nope.

You have the choice of basic, Hardy Spicer with no graser or
Hardy Spicer with graser. The UJ's in you vehicle should be
short-cup, but there no saying if the prop shaft has been
changed to one with long cups without looking.

RTC3291 is the one you should need.
