Hello all

I am stranded in Austria, sort of... (I am taking a few months relaxation here; well that WAS the idea until... :rolleyes: )

I travelled 4000km plus last week returning to the Innsbruck area but in quite a remote location nevertheless. FL1 TD4 2005 manual (275,000km) ran very well as usual, I have excellent MPG. But in the last 1000km hippo developed vibrations that I believe are due to the propshaft carrier bearings failing. Aaaargh... no tools or workshop for the job and so I have to use the nearest Bosch workshop. I can manage with my poor German language skills but this is going to be an adventure... :vb-bomb:

Today I have an inspection ahead of the earliest overhaul appointment first week of August. Question in my head is, "What is the likely time to remove the propshaft assembly to overhaul and refit the bearings"? 3 hours? More?

I am hoping I can have the propshaft removed to protect the other transmission components and run 2WD until August.

And what else needs looking at on the drive train or is good to replace apart from the VCU? My VCU is good.

Hi,

If you only need to change the bearings, 3 hours should be enought.

A bad VCU can become hot, if it’s bad.

Check the propshaft for cracked rubber first. If the rubber is cracked you will experience knoking sound when changing gears.

There is 3 uv joints that you need to check and replace if needed.

Also the front diff support is know to fail.

Thank you, your point on the front diff support is a useful reminder!! In fact the cost of front and rear diff supports are so low, I think I will instruct new ones all around!

I am about to get underneath and look at the rubbers. Fortunately I have no knocking. Gear changing is super smooth and I have no other transmission strange noise when driving below 30mph

I'm reasonably sure about my VCU and I have even same brand tyres all around and check their pressures 2 to 3 times per week using 2.1bar
 
Grrrr, rear UJ failed (badly) as well as the propshaft carrier bearings... and rear diff seal too!! Diff supports are serviceable still; the rear wetted from the leaking diff seal.

The VCU looks like it was replaced prior to me having the car 4 years ago (note to self; check the receipts history!)

I shall update the forum with the time and cost as it happens and then mark this as SOLVED, likely 8 August 2024
 
+1 on take prop off & drive it 2WD for now.

Hi,

According to the video, it safer to remove the prop shaft now. When you remove it, put some align marks just in case.
Get some help to remove it.

It’s better to take GKN at least the UV joints , for the bearings even cheap ones can do the job. You also need new nuts (nylstop) and new spacers.

FOR INFO - The removal, full overhaul of all propshaft joints, bearings and carriers took 4 hours. A further 2 hours to change the front RHS inner driveshaft boot which had split.
