Hi i have noticed that the front prop on my 90 td5 has quite alot of backlash, there is a large clunk when setting off and letting the clutch on and off, i thought to replace the differential flanges but i am not sure, any help would be good

You need to get under it and start turning things to see what gives, maybe its a UJ, maybe the splines etc...

I have the same problem please help a newbie understand, how do you test for backlash, and how do you interpret the result

To check for backlash, put everything in neutral, handbrake off (chock the wheels) then crawl underneath and grab the props and twist them. 1/8 of a turn is OK, 1/4 of a turn is getting a bit much. Mines got a good 1/4 of a turn and still doesn't clunk.
Your clunking is more likely to be the A Frame Ball Joint at the back.

ok been underneath, front prop turns +/- 1/8th, rear hardly moves.

so I presume it's the A frame ball joint, do you suggest that I change the bushes as well as the ball joint?

how long / how many miles have they done?
are they poly or real?
DO NOT USE A BRITPART BALLJOINT! or you'll be changing it again in 6 months.

My 1997 90 is an old girl and has done 284000KM, only got her 1000km ago, since then have had the head overhauled, was cracked and blowing water out through the exaust but got her welded up and pressure test now good as new., fixed a few oil leaks, still got a few to go, and I am busy trying to get her back in great shape , so I really do'nt know when they where changed but probably original one's.

do you recomend orginal Landy rubber parts or poly one's?

thanks for your help and sugestions

Yes, I would change the bushes for Genuine LR ones if I were you.
If you can afford a genuine Ball Joint, get one of them too, if not, Bearmach ones are OK.

ok will price originals from LR, but here in South Africa that is going to cost plenty.

how difficult is it to remove the ball joint and bushes or will i need professional help ( and not when i get a quote from LR ) to do the installation?

Buster did a write up on the Ball Joint and Bushes replacement - have a look in his section.

Ok checked out a few forums in south africa SA 4x4 Community Forum - The only forum for the offroad and 4x4 enthusiast - Powered by vBulletin but probally the best SA 4x4 Community Forum - The only forum for the offroad and 4x4 enthusiast - Powered by vBulletin

I have found a stockist of Bearmach parts see British 4x4 so if the stealers come up with there normal outlandish prices I will have an alternative supply

I will read the write up by buster, love having a landy all this free education, :)

Just checked busters thread , brilliant, definitely a picture says a thousand words
Glad ye liked it;):D
If ye need to do the A frame ball joint, it might be an idea to take it to an engineering place or somewhere with a big press.

shouldn't be a problem my son in law and his brothers own 2 panel beating shops, trust my daughter such a bright child :) let you know how it goes

Ok changed all the bushes at the rear see picture(what a nice son in-law:) ) will get it back to night will check if Knock has gone
