Hello All,

New to the forum, no vehicle as yet - but hopefully soon.

I am looking round at the moment for a 90/110 project which I can play with and get how I would like. Ideally it would be a rolling resto job, however I am not ruling out a full re-build on an new galv chassis. I am planning to keep it long - long term as my daily drive so might as well have peace of mind first as last.

I will be at the cheap end of the market so I know whatever I buy is likely to have quite a few horrors lurking, so any advice on what to look out for would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

:)

where to start
check chassis rails/outriggers/ rear cross member anywhere muck can hide

bulkhead/ check foot,wells/around air vent flaps under window/ a pillars

gearbox check all gears hi/low box.

best advice. do your homework on what landy you want, don,t buy the first one you look at plenty out there

plenty of people on here doing rebuilds . read them get pointers

don,t be afraid to ask questions. even daft one,s
we are here to help/ we don,t bite
good luck.

can you weld/ or know someone who can, who has a mig welder

budget how much.

on a 90/110 anything less than £1500.00 IS GUNNA BE A BASKET CASE MAJOR WORK/ MONEY

for that sort of money you could get a series 3 88/109 runabout needing few daft jobs sorting out.
something to think on

Thanks for the pointers, probably looking at about £2000.00 maybe a little more at a stretch.

I can weld and I have a mig welder, although its been a few years since I laid down a weld in anger. I am kind of hoping its a bit like riding a bike and it will come back to me with a bit of practice. Have restored / rebuilt cars when I was younger so I'm not too much of a stranger to the spanner, hammer, grinder etc. Just had too many years being cosseted in boring euroboxes and got used to taking them to a man with a laptop when they need fixing.

Not a bad idea on the series 3, might give that a bit of thought. Am going to be using it for pulling a horse trailer at weekends (other halfs horse, and part of my excuse to get a proper motor) so need to weigh up best option....

Ex MOD can be good, I have a 110 1986 paid £1900 for it and was a pretty solid vehicle, ie chassis solid, though Landrover 90 & 110 non turbo, unless true Defenders.
For towing probably want the turbo, but NAS engines fab and simples.
Good luck, any advice wanted just post, guys here have all the answers :)

Have a look through my rebuild thread. I was completely new to the defender world and I learnt the hard way. Spend a lot of money buying the defender I had and I have spent more now. I would always take someone who knows what they are looking for. Chassis is the killer but if you look through my build it's not the only thing to worry about. Mine wouldn't even make a MOT and I payed over twice the amount you are looking to pay. They saw me coming. If it has lots of chequer plate it could be covering things up.
Next time I will shop around.
Best of luck with it. I have found the defender such a easy vechile to work on. Lots of blood sweat and tears but we'll worth it in the end.

Good advice! look around, I almost bought first one I looked at but niggle stopped me, glad I didnt as although was a fair priced 200TDI it had rot in the chassis, 5 bold tyres, a fooked battery and a motor that hadnt seen a service since it left the showroom. Ok one I bought I have lavished time on (got a thread too) but at least it was good to go. :)
