I am trying to register my land rover in the UK and it doesn't seem straight forward. It was exported from the UK to Germany, where it was eventually bought, registered and insured by my brother. He passed it to me (brotherly love, eh?) and I am now trying to register it in the UK again. For that I need to insure it here as DVLA won’t accept the German insurance for just now. But not only is it difficult for me to find an insurer that can fit the vehicle into the right category, some companies won’t insure it unless it’s registered. So, to register it, it needs to be insured. To insure it, it needs to be registered. At least that’s what the people from NFU Mutual say. Catch 22? There must be a way of doing this. But how? Any tips greatly appreciated!

Id go back to the DVLA, I cant see how any insurance company would or could insure it as its not a british registered vehicle.

Some companies ( Adrian flux) will insure off the chassis number. That's what I had to so whilst waiting for the reg to come through for mine. Then when I had a reg I just updated the insurance company and it was all good.

Insured on the chassis though I could only drive it for an mot, not around any old place

Thanks all. I'll have a read through that DVLA info. Will phone DVLA tomorrow. I find it's easier to speak to one of them instead of working my way through their website. Shame they closed all their local offices. My brother insured it in Germany in a way that I can drive it here for a while but the sooner I can sort it all out in my name the better.

Hi Julchen,

How did you get on with this?

If you want me to give you a call just send me a PM - I'm sure we can help.

Cheers

Hi Flat.

I assume the ex-armi landi on the photos is your pride and joy. Have you tried other insurance companies apart from Adrian Flux and if so were the able to " categorize" it. When I tried some insurance companies and we went through all the different stages, (land rover , defender, year of registration ...) to identify it without a reg number, the insurance people always ended up confused because they couldn't really identify it. It just didn't fit their tick boxes. Some asked if mine was an estate. How can it be an estate? Some asked if there were any numbers or letters after Defender 90 (e.g TD5). Well mine is anything but a Turbo diesel. Have you any ideas where I can look and find out what mine is? I only now it is a SWB Defender, 1986, engine size 2491cc.
Cheers.

Julchen,

I have the facility to manually enter the information of the vehicle, so there won't be any issues with finding the correct vehicle on our system - give me a PM and i'll arrange a call back for today for you.

Cheers

Thanks Jordon.
I have already been in touch with one of your colleagues at Adrian Flux. They have been very helpful but the quote/conditions don't quite fit with what I need. I still have to check some details/ see how I can adjust my needs before I can go for the quote. Maybe some other insurance company can give me all I need without having to make compromises.

No problem.

If there are any needs that we are unable to help with - Do give me a PM as I can double check and refer directly to insurers.

Thanks

Julchen - yes I had that difficulty with 'high street' insurers (admiral, direct line etc) but all the specialists had no problem - I had quotes from Adrian flux, Lancaster and nfu mutual - all had no problems with the vehicle details (make, engine, year etc).

I chose flux purely on cost alone, no other reason. I have renewed with them now and have no reason to not repeat that so far.

Once it's registered with the dvla then the high street people will (probably) have no problem although I haven't tried them so don't take my word for it.

I have a limited mileage, ex-mil policy with flux, fully comp with breakdown - suits my needs perfectly as this is a third vehicle used purely for fun.

Hi Ed

Do you remember if NFU Mutual were willing to insure your landi on the chassie number? They told me 'no', which is a shame because I would have liked to go with them. Local office where you can speak to someone in person and not over the phone or internet. I need that sometimes to explain myself better.
