Last week l had a new clutch fitted by a local independent LR specialist
2005 90 XS on 100,000 miles

They also replaced the flywheel, as they said it was worn out.
The bill came to £930.

The clutch is certainly improved, the pedal action quite a bit lighter and there’s no longer a clattering as the engine is turned off.

However, after the vehicle has been on a longer run it does not change smoothly from 1-2 and 2-3 although it’s fine when cold.

Also the Defender has started making a screeching noise when you first set off in the morning (not at any other time)
As you pull away in first gear. At least l assume it’s the release bearing.

Why would this happen? I take it they fitted a clutch kit which included a new bearing. Can anything else cause this noise?

The noise was there before and it sounds like the clutch to me.
 
But I consider the spigot bush/ bearing replacement as part of a clutch change, especially if it’s a bearing,
Clutch dust is so fine it will get into the bearing and cause it to seize,
 
There’s no problem taking it back l already spoke to them.
It’s just that with all new parts l wouldn’t have expected the noise to come back within 60 miles.

So the noise was there before the clutch work?
Did you aks what make clutch they fitted?

It's a plain bearing ie bronze bush
 
Strange that they put a new flywheel on and the bearing is duff, they would have to put a bush into the new flywheel.

A new one is quite cheap but involves taking off the gearbox again.

It's an oilite (sintered bronze) bush ? - ( LFB500050 ) - needs to be soaked in oil for 24 hours before fitting to fill all the pores...

IME, they squeal like a stuck pig if they are fitted dry - or distorted during fitting.

They can be a bugger to fit, some need the hole reaming slightly... oh Matron ....

Indeed they can - last one I did was an absolute b*******. Ended up smashing the old one out, reaming the hole clean, and pressing the new one in with a right Heath Robinson bridge across the clutch pressure plate holes :rolleyes:

At least the new one got soaked in oil a bit longer :D :rolleyes: :mad:

Lr garage would know that, general car place maybe not, in fact i dont even know what normal cars have in the way of a spigot bush?

It's a good practice to soak them for as long as possible, had mine in oil for weeks before fitting

Sorry you are right it is pressed into the end of the crank.
Manual box cars have a variety of solutions many have a small ball race or even a needle roller.
 
2.25 has bronze bush as do plenty of other engines but it only seems to be the td5 where they commonly need changing
 
You don't say quite what the symptoms are with the poor gearchanges but it sounds like a bit of torque is getting through even when the clutch is depressed. I wonder whether the bronze bush is binding on the input shaft? It's typically a very tight fit in the hole in the crankshaft and sometimes, even if it fits on the input shaft initially, it can squeeze in a bit and bind once it has been bashed into the crankshaft.
Dual mass flywheels can make some odd noises and create some strange vibrations, especially under load - they're full of springs and compensators. Mine got a lot quieter once I had renewed it. So I'd expect a new one to be quiet, but you never know. Plus of course, as mentioned, the release bearing. Again, one would assume a new one had been fitted as part of the clutch change, but you occasionally get duff ones.

Nearly £1000! Phew, I'm glad I can manage to do most of my own repairs. At least when I hire myself I know I'm reasonably cheap and cheerful.
