How long should it take for the system to prime the fuel when turning on the ignition? Mine takes a goo20 seconds - starts with a low-pitched noise then increases to high-pitched for a couple of seconds before stopping. I am sure I may have to replace injector seals...so just checking.

Not sure what engine you are running but im fairly sure my td5 just remained as a constant noise when ignition was on, I don't have any recollection of it stopping.
 
Sounds like there may still be some air in there. It can hang around for a while after the fuel system has been apart. After a fuel filter change I find I have to run the purge cycle about two or three times - you know, the one where you switch on and them press the accelerator about five times in quick succession. After that, you've got enough fuel in the system to start the car, but may still need another purge cycle to get it going the following morning after it has settled a bit more.

If it’s a TD5 (I’m talking about my D2) with the ignition in position 1 the pump runs then stops. I’ve can’t remember if I ever heard it running with the engine running to be honest 🤔
 
Yup, if you don't start the engine the pump runs for a while and then stops. I think there's a pressure switch in there somewhere that turns it off.

There's also a rubber valve in the block that the fuel filter screws onto. It's in the spout that's closest to the chassis on the side that's pointing towards the engine (the medial anterior, to put it in posh Latin-sounding terms). These can deteriorate and allow fuel to drain away from the engine when the vehicle is left standing, thus making it difficult to start. If that's a problem, you can get replacement kits.

You don't need to prime it each time you start it, if that is what you mean?
Ignition on, glow plug light goes out and then start it.
My fuel pump used to be quite loud but has been a bit quieter lately, good sign or bad sign I don't know.
 
Thanks everyone - I am going to change the injector washers and seals next - I was curious re the prime cycle as sometimes it starts first time (engine turning about 5 or 6 times) others it struggles to start. It does sound like there is air in there though, as it sounds like its sucking the last bit of a drink with a straw by the cooler (if that makes sense)

So far as I know the seals have never been done, a good opportunity to get the injector codes too. Cheers!
 
Doesn't sound right, if I wait for the glow plug light to go out it will start with a flick of the key.

Mine was the same even when the fuel pump failed it would still start first turn. Definitely sounds like the system is bleeding down form somewhere.
