My 90 (1994) was parked up for a year when i was away and i now have her back on the road but the power steering is gone, it was fine when i parked her up but day 2 and every time i make a turn it sounds like someone is kicking a pig in the bo*!!cks, its a very loud squeal, i checked the power steering fluid and it is very dirty looking (white-ish pink with bits of orrange in it)
Is it worth my while trying to drain it and seeing if that dose any good or is it more likely a replace job? and do i drain it from the fluid holder or do i drain it from the power steering unit?

on a second thought, im not 100% the squealing is from the power steering..could it be anything else?

Replace the fluid for a start, if it looks knackered then it is. Also check the tension of the power steering belt. It needs to be reasonably tight for it to work properly.

I've got the same issue, I haven't got round to sorting it yet though. My fluid is all ok, so I'm looking at belts. Before I go scratching around for my workshop manual, where is it? And any ideas how tight it should be??

dan berry let me know how you get on with the belts and if it fixes the problem, i can get by if i dont turn hard but ill have to have a look at the issue in the next week, going to drain it first

Probably cant hurt to put new fluids in. My neighbours call it the chuckle wagon, because it sounds like a pack of hyenas when I turn. They are **** takers though.

I don't know about a 300 TDI, but on a 200 TDI and 19j TD, the power steering pump is on the right hand side of the engine (as you look at it from the front of the car) underneath the alternator. The belt goes around the water pump/viscous fan unit and round the PAS pump. It should be tight enough so it doesn't flop around with the engine running, though you should be able to move it around slightly.

Right, so that'll be the weekends activities then. I'm putting off some welding work, so that'll do nicely!! I'll post the pics and give write up when I'm done.

For the belt tension i was always told that it should be tight enough so that you can twist the belt 90 degrees in the centre of the longest belt run.

right, had a dig around today and it turns out it was only that the belt was loose..i thought it wasn't getting fluid and that was causing the noise but i bled the thing a little and it was full so i tightened the belt and everything was 100%, felt a bit stupid as it was only the belt
