Hello, i have a 1993 Discovery2.4 diesel and have only had it for 4 months, i have now encounted a problem of the power steering seeming to work only occasionally. It gets very hard when at lower revs and then as the revs increase gets slightly better but no where near what it should be. Does anyone know if this is a common fault and is it likely to be the power steering pump? The fluid is full and the belts are fine, if it is the pump any ideas how much and if they are a mission to change? Thanks or any help, will defiantely not go back to a car having now discovered the discovery, thanks

Matt,
I have a 97 disco and had the same problems, although not so severe would catch sometimes at low revs and go very stiff. I changed the steering pump and all is now fine, so it could be your problem but can't be sure.(my pump also had a slight leak) You can get pumps from http://www.dingocroft.co.uk/ mine was about £90.00, and they are not to bad to fit as they bolt on the front right hand side of the engine. The belts are the hard part to put back on...hope this helps good luck.

hi pumps are quite easy to do before you remove belt crack off the front pulley bolts 3 10mm and then remove belt long 15mm spanner makes this easy, and just 4 10mm bolts again to remove pump and of course pipes that go to pump, when refitting bleed slowly dont go on full lock until going side to side a few times turn engine off let bubbles settle then fill to correct level if need be i hope this helps, tiga
