The power steering has failed on my defender (300tdi).

There's no leaks anywhere that I can see. The pump is making a bit of noise but not that noisy. I've had the belt off no play in the pump either. Any body got any suggestions on what could be wrong?

I assume you have checked the oil level? also try cracking the PAS box bleed screw to make sure you have fluid flow.
 
Well just cracked the bleed nipple and fired it up there seemed to be a good flow coming out. Could the steering box itself be knackerd?

What do you mean by a good flow? Cos when I cracked my bleed nipple and started it up the fluid positively fountained out and hit the bonnet. Made an awful bloody mess but good to know there's pressure there lol
 
Fluid was redish didn't look to bad. There was a small fountain no where near close to hitting bonnet though. A friend has got a spare pump I'm going to stick that on see what it's like then.
