I have a leaking (proper leak) power steering box on my 110. I also have what I can only describe as a variable steering feel? Sometimes it feels normal, sometimes it feels very light, and sometimes it is heavier than normal. it is not a tight spot in the column (uj) as it does not do it constantly and it is not always at the same point in the steering.

Does the above symptom sound like it is likely to be box or pump related?
If box is it likely to be linked to the failing seals?

Assuming it is not the box and that doe snot need replacing, how easy is it to replace the seals, I have read guides saying it is possible to do in situ, can anyone confirm? Removing the drop arm is not going to be a problem as I had it off before Christmas and everything is nicely coated in ATF oil!

Also on a more extreme note, can anyone recommend me a good replacement/re-coned steering box source. If I need to remove the box to replace the seals, I would probably replace with a recon unit. The unit I currently have was fitted second hand (during rebuild and chassis swap after a RTC) about 150k ago so I am happy if it is due for replacement.
 
If the steering goes very light, so light you can turn the wheel with one finger this points to a fail of control valve inside. Given the leak as well I recon time for a change.

I don't know if it is light enough to turn with one finger as I am always driving at the time and notice the change but it is usually when going straight and it lightens and then becomes "twitchy" because there is no resistance to the usual old movie style steering variance.

Do you have any recommendations of where to get a good quality recon unit?
 
Hi dag, Does sound like yours is on the way out, after a bit mine became very light at all times, you could turn the wheel with one finger while at a standstill. It was nice when driving off road but well hairy on the road. I replaced mine with one from a 90 rust bucket I scrapped for the 200 engine.
It is a bit of a minefield, there is a wide selection of recon box's out there with prices from about £150 to £500 plus However WPS Bristol [I think ] claim to supply top quality recons. Not had anything from them myself but the do have 3 year warranty. Others may have more info. Cheers, Tottot.
 
There was a similar thread on here recently. Swop the box out and exchange for about £130 exchange reconditioned. Looking at the YouTube videos (Britannia maybe) it looks a pita and very messy.

I have changed a steering box before on a friends td5 90, I remember it taking the two of us most of the day but I don't remember it being that difficult. I am not to worried about the actual removal and fitting process, it is more a reputable supply of a recon box. I will have a look at bray steering and WPS Bristol as mentioned above.

When I say messy I mean removing the oil seals and shaft, power steering fluid everywhere
 
I used autosteer on Ebay. a couple of days turn-a-round for £130ish quid. They even removed my drop arm for me as I don't have the tool.
