I currently have a 1963 mostly 2a landrover.
While my fuel pump is away having much needed TLC I thought (bad move) I would replace the oil in the dif's and gear boxes.
The gear boxes were not a porblem. The front Dif was a little on the dry side so empted it out and refilled:). Now the bad news the rear dif. I was full of happiness and removed the plug and this oily gunk came splogging out (nice). Then I went to refill in the normal manner and there is no fill plug:doh:
Any thoughts please.
Turning the thing upside down is not, accordding to my father an option

Drill one then tap and die ;)

Or are you sure its just not hidden by a layer of ****e

Also just noticed I've gone past 1000 posts :p

filler plug is on diff housing on earlier vehicles and not diff pan like front unless later diffs been fitted ,where you will either have to jack one side up and remove halfshaft and pour down stub axle ,or weld nut and make your own filler

Can't you fill it through the breather? I fitted range rover diffs which was a brilliant idea until I tried to put the oil in! I think I looked up the exact amount either on here or in the haynes manual.

its always a good idea to take out the filler plug before you drain the oil from anything.....not only from the point of rust and corrosion and rounded off nuts etc... but letting air in at the top can give quicker and more complete draining.

if all else fails tis sometimes possible with a tight fitting plastic tube on a squeezy bottle to push the oil in , pull the tube out and whip the plug in without loosing too much

It's entirely possible someone has put a front diff into the rear diff case - the only difference is the lack of fill plug! Rear diff fill plug is on the driver's side on the flat bit just above half height on the "nose" of the diff and is often so covered in crud you can't find it without a good dig around. Otherwise filling via the half shaft hole is probably the easiest.

the diff and housing have allways been the same front and back thats why front has filler in diff pan

Thanks to all for your help.
Dr Evil I owe you a beer of two although looking at your profile picture I am not entirely sure I would care to meet you in a dark alley.
