Evening all, well after spending 1200 quid this month on a fair few spares, labour and gearbox my Defender has still thrown it back in my face:mad:!

Today whilst on route to Newcastle and back (110 miles round trip) I started to hear a squealing from what I thought was the fan belt. It only squealed after backing off the accelerator or on initial acceleration. I have noticed that the bearing on my alternator occasionally squeals (its on the to do list)....So happy days here's me thinking new belt tensioner and replace the alternator or recon the current one........this is when I noticed my main issue!

Coolant was now flowing from between the seams on my expansion tank and on checking my oil filler cap she was breathing fairly hard...you can see where this is going!

My Defender has no white substance around the filler cap.

It has up until now not really used much coolant.

It has a quick puff of black/grey smoke on start up.

My heater matrix seems to work well enough for round North Yorkshire.

Once the vehicle had cooled down I removed the expansion tank cap and saw a small amount of bubbles whilst placing a load on the engine.

I have recently replaced the rocker cover gasket and it is wet again.

My temperature gauge through out todays drive never moved from its normal position (little past 12 oclock)

My hoses and thermostat are warming along with the engine normally.

So cutting to the chase with what I have described, i'm think my head gasket may have gone between cylinder and water jacket. First thing on cards is new expansion tank and cap but has anybody else suffered these symptom's and what was your out come.

Been on google all afternoon but thought asking you lot would be more constructive!........just stripped out my roof liner for a refurb and seal my leaks and this was not on my plans for today....:whoosh:

if its a 300 tdi gaskets can go , just because of age ,its worth checking rad gets hot all over once repaired and do you remove bung on thermostat housing to check coolant level regulary , temp sender not moving isnt unusual

she's an R plate 98. Bought from the now defunct MRM landrovers.

Been thinking the head may of been leaking for a while. This seems to have confirmed my doubts.

All pipes/thermostat are warming up, never checked my radiator (tomorrow when I walk the dugs i'll check)

To be honest I've never checked the bung since its water pump was changed. Probably a bad habit due to us not doing them on the work Wolfs!.

I,ve checked the P-gasket no leaks, it was removing the filler cap that leads me to believe ma gasket may of gone...

So your saying the temp gauges don't allway's move to show over heating?.....balls:(

its worth checking by removing plug (err4686b is brass version)as tank level doesnt necessarily indicate engine level, rad would need to be a running temp to check function, unless fully immersed in coolant temp sender wont read correctly

cheers for the pointers jamesmartin

I,ll remove the bung tomorrow and run here up to see whats there.

Then go for a drive and see if the rad is getting warm, is there any specific spots to check to see if the coolant is circulating correctly?

Going back to the expansion tank, the bubbles are still there and i've now noticed coolant solidifying round one of the top hoses. Tomorrow i'll swap the jubilee clip and watch that an all....my neighbours must think I,m mad working on the rover in the dark wea a head torch on!

Jamesmartin do you recommend any make of expansion tank or type?

Before I throw more money at the frigging thing!

if its not circulating all over rad theres an issue ,head gasket failure is likely if its been hot ,most failures ive seen dont reach the stage when gasket blows right through and then pumps coolant out at quite a rate ,but are noticeable by darl staining across fire ring were some combustion gasses leak across to water way

disco tanks the same must be plenty of those about

Aye been trawling fleabay and the other sites. But folk want silly money fur stuff. The aftermarket will do for the time being.

I,m back in work the following week I,m sure I may find one lying about!

Well jamesmartin, today checked coolant level, just below seam in expansion tank. coolant was also flowing at thermostat bleed bolt/bung.

Heater was also working fine after vehicle was at running temperature.

Bubbles are still been seen in expansion tank and on initial start up and drive she seems slower and rougher than usual......think i'll book her in for a proper assessment and await the results!
