Hi,

Im looking for a decent towing vehicle that looks nice for my wife to drive to school but isnt the size of a small town :doh: and the freelander appears to fit the bill.

Locally to me there is a Freelander Kalahari TD4 2003 with 138K miles for sale with a couple of listed issues.

It has had the following work done

EGR Bypass (pictured),
BMW vortex crank case breather filter added,
new stronger rear diff mounts changed,
New MAP sensor This service,
New Vacuum hoses
New Vacuum boost solenoid
Full manifold head clean and Gasket change
New Rear Fuel Pump 2 years ago.

The issues are

1) it is supplied with a replacement rear electric window motor as the one on the car is broken (is this a common problem?)

2) a drop in power (wont go over 50mph) and as can be seen from the diagnostic the turbo actuator arm seems to be the problem -

Does this mean a repalcement turbo and if so is this an expensive job(rough idea of price)?

Although not gone that the clutch would be in need of looking at or replacing - again are these standard or is this an expensive job (roughly)

4)
SRS light on the dash was also picked up and the Land Rover technician explained that this would just need resetting as the Airbags are due There 10 Yearly Check. - Again is this a common thing for the airbag light to need resetting?

I appreciate the car will sell for less than I could buy one on a car sales but the one in the car sales will probably have these problems in the next year and it is better to know what you are buying than shelling out a couple of grand more for the same car with hidden problems.

Any help greatfully received as I would like to know what questions to ask and i thought you guys would be the best people to ask.

In my opinion if there are probs, unless its a quick, easy or cost effective fix, I'd walk away

There are plenty of them out there...keep looking bud
 
1) Rear window - reasonably common on the forum - if the parts are supplied - then bit of time and possible agro till the ECU sorts out calibration - but not serious.

2) Low power - once again common problem with TD4 and lots of threads on the forum about it. Do a search and you should be able to get an idea of what you're in for. Start your search with 'limp home'.

3) Clutch - I don't think the clutches are 'expensive' - if you're going to do it yourself, its bit more complex than a run of the mill FWD as you have to remove the props, disconnect the front diff/IRD and sit it on the cross member - then take the box out. If you're going to get it done at a garage - that's easy - give them a call for a quote!

3) SRS light - don't know - have a search on the forum, i'ts been discussed recently on a thread where the dashboard was taken out and refitted.

As you say, most of these problems will probably occur as they commonly come up on the forum - so if the price is right, do some homework to see if you want to take them all on in 1 hit!
 
Round figures, a clutch/dmf/hydraulics replacement will set you back around a grand at a specialist.

Wants to be exceedingly cheap to make it even worth considering

Puts the £1500 or so quoted by Ashcroft for a new Jatco auto installed, into perspective.
 
If you cant do work yourself walk away. Turbo easy recon worst way £120 aprox,single mass clutch kit £360 aprox, Rear window fix worst way £45, Add Oil+Filters. your looking at £600 add on garage labour and its just not worth your while
