Ok so I could use a little advise, I've trying to reduce the infinite clunks and rattles on my 110 300tdi (I know it's never going to happen) but theres some relatively new ones from the transmission/drive chain which are rather alarming.
So here's the symptoms:
- When taking up drive in 1st/reverse theres a noticeable clunk.
- Going downhill and feathering the accelerator theres a nasty grinding sound (most noticeable in 4th/5th).
- When the diff lock off and the handbrake off theres a rather large clunking from the lower end of the transfer box when rotating the outputs.
- Lots of nasty vibrations in 3rd at low rpms.
Here's what I've checked
- The rear A frame ball joint doesn't seem to have any play though the gator does have a nip in it.
- The input gear is the newer type cross drilled and doesn't have any play on the shaft.
- Good oil levels in the gearbox and transfer box. I replaced the master and slave cyclinders on the clutch after it was leaking fluid last year.
- Front prop off. UJ's on the rear prop are fine (the front I changed last year), a little noise from the rear diff (probably the bearing)
- New HD drive flanges all around (but the noise is from the gearbox/transferbox area when driving)
My guess for the first clunk is that the clutch maybe knackered, it selects gears fine but I wonder if the lack of fluid at some point has caused a problem.
Also possibly the transfer box needs new bearings (I've not taken off the bottom cover but I changed the oil last summer).
I live in Norway and my driveway is a 'little rustic', I wonder if the various battles last winter to leave the house (snow chains and diff lock on to try and get through the snow drifts) which may have caused the LT230 to implode a little.
Whats everyones thoughts?
