A forum i used to frequent had a very popular chat function and i wondered what the possibility of having one of these on here would be? Both forums run on vBulletin so i cant see it being a problem. I just think it would be a lot easier than, for example, creating a thread in a specific section just to ask a simple question and receive one or two answers. Plus there is also the opportunity to further enhance the social aspect of LZ and allow members to chat in real time as opposed to threads going off on a tangent with various members, myself included, having conversations. It would certainly be a function i would make good use of.

Anyone elses thoughts?

I don't wanna shag any of you buggers  just saves cluttering up the forum with inane questions of which there is only one answer and saves everyone from having to put up with Bolly, Rachel and I's ridiculous conversations about a 5 piece 80s themed band

that's the beauty! your reeeedonkeylessness is captured for future generations to see.. if you confined your chat then people might think you are a wise fellow :p :D :cool2:

Look at his smug face. Thinks he's funny cos he hung on Lukes back whilst he ran, jumped and somersaulted his way around Dagoba. As if the bloody training wasn't hard enough

Chat rooms can have pros & cons.

+ It could give some of the full time keyboard warriors somewhere to hang out rather than clutter up threads with inane banter*, no names  (*as opposed to useful banter :p )

- someone might have to moderate it/scan logs etc. Spam could be an issue too.

A more useful feature would be a locked reference library of threads where the banter has been edited out/removed, everyone soon gets to know where the reference thread is on a particular topic so they're easy to link instead of directing noobs to the search every time. Searching for the definitive thread would be much easier as you wouldn't have to read 4 dozen threads directing someone to the search (which lets face it, is not brilliant)
The downside is it would take a hell of a lot of work to build the reference section as it becomes a small mirror of the whole forum. OK sticky threads can do this job, but then the top of the forums get cluttered if every good thread became stuck, if people rated threads more it might help, but not many people bother rating threads!

I miss half the new threads as the "new posts" search times out on about page 5 before I get to see the other 5 pages of titles

I used to moderate a big yank gardening forum where the reference section was a brilliant feature, shame it disappeared yrs ago, it could have been a good book.

why not just stick an irc chan up, tell people and see what happens.. don't need to do anything with the forum software then

The trouble with having a shout box/chat room on a big forum like this is by the time you've replied there's half a dozen or more shouts, makes it very difficult to keep track of.

I'm not sure if you're familiar with ARRSE? The army website. Very popular and very very busy forum but it worked well there and was a good laugh
