Hi,

my name is Mike. I’m from Slovenia. I have been driving Landrovers for most of my adult life. I currently own Discovery 300 tdi auto. It developed weird problem after axle transplant....

So here it is. I fitted front and rear axles from a defender 90. Partially because mine were leaking diff oil everywhere, but mostly because the defender ones were fitted with ARB airlocks, HD halfshafts, 4.11 gears (or even higher, my speedo is now showing 60mph when I’m actually doing about 40) and castor corrected radius arms. The axles were fitted to a car as it would be to a defender, meaning no antiroll bars or steering damper...

I’ve also fitted front double cardan propshaft, rear 200tdi propshaft, and +2inch terrafirma springs and shocks.

Here’s my problem. When I’m doing certain speed on a road, car develops serious vibration. I shouldn’t really call it vibration, because it feels like the front of my car actually jumps from left to right. The vibration actually snapped my alternator cables off! I dont think this happens at the same speed every time, but it does happen when I go faster than 50mph.

I did a run without front propshaft, and a run without the rear propshaft to see if any of the propshafts could cause this. No difference whatsoever.

Could a lack of antiroll bars caused this? The defeder the axles were fitted to before drove well.

Anyone ever experienced anything like this? What could have caused this?

Are the panard rod bolts tight?
(Bar from bracket on steering box to axle)

also measure the axle lengths to see if they are different

Check the bushes for wear while you're there ...sometimes the wear can elongate the holes ...

Only the Draglink connects to the steering box, Panard rods are from the chassis bracket to the rear axel. ;)

"No steering damper......"
!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And why no AR bar, was it impossible to fit (them?) for some reason?
Also one from left field, could the springs have somehow wound up? Have known this to give terrible shudder, but this is more likely with a MacPherson strut.

No steering damper, because the defender didn't have one. No anti roll bar for the same reason. Also, I spend a lot of time off-road, so antiroll bar would be a resctriction.

Do you think this could cause this?

No idea, but I would be extremely carefully measuring all the chassis mounting points and comparing them to ones on the donor vehicle. If they didn't match I would be concerned. I'd also fit a steering damper, just to see. It may end up that you have to fit stuff for road use then take it off for off road use.

Does it happen after driving over a bump? If your swivel preload is wrong that can produce SCARY level steering wobble
Fortunately in 33 years with a LR I’ve never had dealing with swivels other than leaks on my RR, but when I removed the damper there was quite a bit of steering wobble, needless to say that the damper went back on my return.
But there was a few discussions at the time in the LRO mags on exactly what you correctly stated… so as some say… +1 :)
