The disco has had for a while a bit of a rattle on tick over, sounds to me to be one of the aux pulleys. This gets dramatically worse when putting foot on the accelerator and is directly linked with engine revs, at 1500+ rpm it actually sounds similar to that of a very bad turbo. I pulled both belts (has aircon) and the noise completely goes away, however all pulleys feel relatively smooth when spinning over by hand.
Any ideas?? I'm pulling my hair out with this one!!

I did notice the serp belt seems to be flapping about a bit so fitted a spare but that didnt help. Could it be the tensioner? Here's a video look at the LHS of the belt..
[Edit: actually the RHS as video is upside down! You also cant hear the noise in the video]

Any other advice much appreciated I need the motor for work!!

Sorry just seen i posted this in defender area instead of disco can moderator move please? Thanks

Thanks James first Ive heard of vacuum pump doea that run off the serp belt? Just seen that another symptom is hard break pedal which mine is tough when travelling at slow speeds 5-10mph

rocker cover off all looks ok without checking gaps, put belts back on noise definitely seems to be coming from nearside of engine, using screwdriver in ear its loudest on water pump housing. Took belt off again no noise, the water pump pulley doesnt have much play but does appear to be 'wobbly'/off centre by ~1mm shall post video.
i replaced water pump less than a year ago though

personally cant hear the noise in your video, what make pump was it?and what condition is the tensioner pully in?

That first video you cant hear the problem was to show the slack in the belt. Tensioner seems ok in that there is minimal play and the bearing is not loud.
I dont recall the make of the waterpump but just took off the 3 bolts holding the pulley on and can rotate the pump with a bit of effort, no slack or scraping noise though.

Just took a video driving with windows down, you can hear a whining noise when going on and off the throttle (its an auto)

As there is a tapping noise on tick over and whining under load, I'm pretty sure both are linked, removing the belt eliminates the tapping so wanted to check that the engine whine (can be heard in latest video) also disappears

Ok thanks James shall get another new one this week and hopefully the current pump will hold out till then. Do you think I should get a replacement pulley as well?
