Hi, Ive just bought a new discovery V8 was very cheap and the shell and chassis are mint.

It has a 3.8 V8 from a range rover in it and im struggling!!!

Had some problems running when i got it, wiggled the king lead and made it run ok for the 130 mile trip home (slightly down on power due to timing being out)

Now it has developed a savage misfire on fuel, bogging, spluttering and popping and banging down the road, but seems not too bad over 3000rpm,

but runs quite smoothly on LPG, but not very revvy, struggles at about 2500/3000

new dizzy cap and rotor have been fitted, plenty of fuel at the rail, and everything seems ok, im assuming an ignition problem,

Please help!!!

we know you've got a problem, no need for double posting mate, that's a no-no round here :welcome2:

I've tried deleting the other post. Thought it was more appropriate in this section, however my computer skills arn't that of my literacy!

Those 3.8's are rare, don't blow it up!!!

Sort out your timing buy some new ht leads/cap and rotor arm and it'll probably be fine

have your contact points checked in your distributor too, mine went slack so every time i buried my foot my engine would splutter all over the shop, had to drive round only accelerating gradually to stop it. the replacement part only cost like £7

It feels much more like an ignition cut, very harsh popping and banging, and it's a 3.9 sorry for the typo, idles fine from cold, then all of a sudden, runs like a bag!!

First up, do a search - there is a lot of info in here about various starting/running/misfire issues.

Check your ignition system end to end - only fit genuine Lucas rotor arm and dizzy cap, make sure the HT leads are correctly routed and clipped. Check the inlet side of the engine for air/vacuum leaks, check and clean engine breathers, make sure the ignition timing is correct. Set it up on petrol to start with then make adjustments for LPG.

Good luck.

I have been doing some research and fiddling around with various bits and have discovered that the air flow meter seems to be doing nothing, plugged in or un plugged it makes no difference, runs like a bag!

Solution perhaps??

Could well be but I would suggest that if possible you get a substitute AFM to try before buying one because the problem could be the ECU. In the alternative, put a multimeter on the air flow meter and check it - there are various threads that will tell you what to look for. Also, have a careful check of the plug on the air flow meter - there could be a dodgy connection.
