The garage advised that there is some play in the viscous fan on our TD5. Having just spent a tidy sum on other bits I would rather not pay out more at the moment, is this unit likely to fail and do damage or can it be safely ignored until it gets worse?

It spins freely when stationary so seems ok in that respect. Can the bearings be replaced, and if so does anyone now where they can be sourced from?

It sounds like it's the viscous unit bearing that's giving the play. Usually (on TDi's at least) when the bearing eventually seizes it just locks up.

However, if for any reason the fan becomes detached it will almost certainly right-off your radiator and potentially your engine, so maybe now is the time to replace it? You'll need a 36mm fan spanner and remember that it is a normal RH thread - not LH as in TDi.

OK will order one up, thanks. I am a bit confused with all the left hand/right hand thread stuff...........Haynes confirms normal right hand, sure the garage said otherwise!!!!

Because the garage are ****s!

On TDi 300 it's a LH thread, on TD5 it's a RH (normal) thread.

Well that was easy for a change!!! New fan arrived, open bonnet cover removed, whack spanner with hammer to free then swap fans. 15 minutes max.

There was a fair bit of play on the old one which wont have helped the engine smoothness, so almost certainly worth doing.

Anyone who needs a 36mm spanner in East /West Sussex, I've got one!!!!!
