Not really, but now I've got your attention:

I have a '97 disco with a 300 tdi (as fitted) two mechanics who both 'off road' in discos told me 'it's a disco2' because of the arrangements of buttons on dash etc etc. However, the fella at the Land Rover accessory / parts shop says no, it's a disco 1 later model and that the discovery 2 came into being in '99 (I think).

So, to a layman like me, which is it? That is to say for practical purposes of ordering parts etc....

The binnacle is the thing that holds the gauges and switches.

Dickie seats are the 2 small ones by the rear door.

you can tell by the alpine windows too, D1 held in with rubber seals and D2 are bonded in and smoother in appearance.

The engine is the big decider, Td5, its a 2, 300Tdi its a 1!

Also the D2 has a longer rear overhang to accomodate the forward facing rear dicky seats. If the OP's dicky seats faced in then its the shorter arse so 300Tdi.

Early Disco 1 - note Sherpa van sourced headlamps are too small:

The tail lamps are probably the easiest thing to check; the Disco 1's lamps were from a Maestro van, while the 2's were unique and much larger. Also, check out the door handles.

As the vehicle is a 1997 300tdi, it would appear that it is a Disco 1.

But for the sake of it I have some pictures of the car and the bionicle, just so I can be sure.

thats just a late disco 1

give aways include the door handles, the disco 1 had 'flap' type handles

wheel stud PCD is larger on a disco 1 (same as series/defender and RRC)

the rear lights are mounted higher on a disco 2 on the pillar, on the disco 1 the sit below the level of the rear side window

a 7 seat disco 2 will have airbag rear suspension rather than coils

the side repeater indicators on a disco 1 are small square itmes found on most BL cars the disco 2 has longer more rectangular ones

yours is a disco 1 facelift

If it's a '97 TDi 300 then it's a Disco 1 - no question.
