Hello all,

An admission: I don't own a Landy....! But I do have a sad 1994 Leyland Daf 200 with the Perkins Prima 2.0lt naturally aspirated diesel engine.

In the absence of any easily sourced LDV forums, I thought you wise Landy owners may be able to help as I think the Perkins Prima is an engine you chaps/chappesses may be familiar with.

It has always been really reliable but of late there has been a significant drop in fuel consumption - down from 350miles to a tank to just 200miles.

The power is down too - sluggish acceleration (worse than normal!!) and feels like there is less on the top end.

I've changed fuel and oil filters, swapped out the oil. Chucked in a bottle of injector cleaner.

She starts first turn, so I think glowplugs seem fine.
On immediate start up, there is a big cough of black smoke then she is ticks over fine, but is running with a lot of light blue/grey smoke which has a strong oil smell.

The main symptom when driving is the continued smokiness which while it calms down a bit once warm and running is still an issue. Power and fuel consumption as per above.

There is no coolant loss and she runs at the right temperature.

Oil is being lost though and I am having to keep topping it up. No sign of obvious leaks anywhere in the engine bay and so I am assuming it is being burnt off.

When changing the air filter, i noticed there is a lot of oil residue in there. There is a breather pipe from the oil filler tube assembly to the air filter box, and this seems to be drawing oil into that filter assembly. Is that normal? Doesnt seem right.

The van reads 40,000k on the clock, which I believe - it was owned by a borstal and was used as a minibus to take the naughty boys 1mile down the road to a working farm, then back again, and was owned by them for a long time. The general condition would also suggest that this is true.

I am assuming then that this is possibly the piston rings that are shot.

Does anyone have any suggestions on other soultions - should I try and get the injectors cleaned? If so, any idea as to the rough cost of that?

Is this a case of dropping that engine out and sticking a new one in... i've seen one on eBay for about £250.....

Grateful for any of your guidance.

Tim:)

It's traditional to drop a post in the 'Intro Section' but sounds like the possibilities are as you say rings or possibly head gasket failure between combustion chamber and an oilway/cam gallery
