Hi Guys

I've been a member for just over a month now and have been carefully researching all previous threads.

Is it possible to do a UK to Cape Town trip in a 110 and take 4 passengers in total, incl the driver and passenger seat being occupied. (4 people)

I know there's a lot of weight involved and very limited space. Has it been done and is it practical or a bad idea?

With a Sankey trailer it might be a bit more bearable. But I'd go for a 130 crewcab & a sankey if I was you.

Not been in the back of a 110 but the load space is the same as my 90 which we use with only 2 people and space is tight. It will be achievable with a well laid out trailer. A bare Sankey in good condition will likely suffice. They can carry a fair amount of kit and weight.

As Red says you could take a 130 double cab instead.

Thanks

It's early days still so I can still look into the 130 option. Wife and I have gathered two keen friends desperate to join us.

Depends on route and the people you travel with:

Route: Water and Fuel dependant - If you are going the Eastern route - Egypt-Sudan- Ethiopia etc- and have no desire to go far off the beaten track then you should easily manage with 4 in the Landy provided you pack carefully (we met two up on a motorbike doing this route so you understand how little you actually need). However this can prevent you deviating your route as your range will be dictated by how much fuel and water you can physically carry due to the extra passengers.

Secondly, travelling with an extra 2 people for such a long duration will test anyone's friendship. To give you an example, our friendship with another couple was put to the test when we travelled in a Rangie for part of a journey to Cape Town and they even had their own vehicle, a Hilux!

I would definitely NOT recommend a trailer for the trip as not only does it add to the price of everything (fuel, ferries, etc) but it will slow you down, get you stuck, strain your vehicle, reduce your braking distance, increase maintenance, reduce parking choices, restrict maneourvrability, restrict route choice, and encourage you to bring tons of crap you don't need.

Thanks Richard, that really helps, I have a lot more to consider now and appreciate your imput.

Does anyone have any experience with regard to UK vehicles in SA. When my wife and I do this trip we will remain in SA where we are both from. We hear so many stories about people doing the trip down south but what happens to their vehicles once there?

We'd like to keep our vehicle once in SA but have heard varying stories about it being a hell of a mission to relicense/import as well as stories saying that it's very simple.

Does anyone have any insight or experience in this regard? Thanks.

Sorry just seen this thread.

3 of us travelled down to the pyrenees in a 1996 110, and although it was only 10 days, the person in the middle was cramped, unlike the series/countys (land rover went backwards here IMO) I've found the higher middle seats in a defender gives less legroom and makes it harder to see out the front, and the views.

That said I know of 6 people in a 110 doing a 2 week trip.

The only advantage for whoever sat there, it was easier to get some sleep, though with two people, unless they're 'vertically challenged', it will feel cramped.

Best of luck anyway.

Well since you most definitely will require a carnet if you do plan to drive to SA the best (and up to date) source for the difficulties for importing your car is to talk to Paul McGowan of RAC. Do a google search for contact details.
