Had trouble starting after standing overnight turns over very slowly but turns over alot quicker and starts straight away after a short journey already put a new battery on made no difference.tonight disconnected the battery at work and left standing for 11 hours reconnect and turned over quickly and started straight away so is there a usual suspect causing this ?. 97 EDC auto.

Turn it off start systematically removing fuses one at a time and bridge each removed fuse with a multimeter, this should show where the electrons are flowing away.
 
I connect both multimeter leads in series with the negative battery post and the negative battery connection to the measure amperage draw.
Then I start pulling fuses, relays, unplugging sockets and even removing wires off of alternator while watching for the multimeter reading to do a big drop in amps. Then that circuit is my power drain culprit.
 
Ok thanks for the help electrics are not my strong point not sure what setting or where the leads are supposed to plug into the meter here's a pic of what I have.

Black lead into "COM" red into the "10A" and the button where it is is good, disconnect battery negative lead, put the red probe on it and the black on the battery terminal and report the result
 
that's a 20mA normal drain nothing excesive there, let the meter hoocked, block down the bonnet switch close the doors, lock the vehicle and see then cos maybe there is drain only while it's locked
 
Doesn't seem like much. Alarm and/or immobiliser, clock? Could it just be corroded terminals? but then I know fukc all about electrics. Pal once had a problem, found it was the accessory plug in the boot, but I don't think yours has that does it? Anyway, they usually only work when the ignition is turned to first position. Feel for you. do you have a fancy radio, DAB or something? Alternator giving full power? Bad earth from batt, earth to engine, or to starter motor, (Bolts done up tight)? Power cable to starter good and tight? Best of luck!
 
With it locked and bonnet switch down got 0.02 same as before has been starting fine last couple of days does this now and again but will go bad soon going to clean up earth's, battery cables, starter and alternator connections this weekend.but have noticed headlights are not very bright (Osram night breakers) look orange instead of white also a complete pig to start on the cold mornings very slow cranking just like a bad battery.
 
My 300tdi was a bit like this, especially in the cold weather. When we went to the Dales for Christmas I used to take a spare battery, a charger, and a set of jump leads. I got the most powerful battery that would fit in the hole, but it could have done with a better one. I bet it is a combination of all the things you are going to do, so do them all and you'll probably solve it. Best of luck
