Having striped my axels down to the bare casing and attacking them with a wire brush in an angle grinder they are now looking very tidy on stands in my garage. My question is this... What sort of paint to put on em? Didnt know if red lead followed by stone chip and some black hamerite would be alright? Will they need a blow over of acid etch to make it all key properly? Im not 100% sure but are the casings cast iron?

Your opinions please

I painted mine with 1 coat of Hammerrite No. 1 Rustproofer and Primer, followed by 2 coats of Smooth Hammerrite.
Looks good so far.

Remember, if you're going to apply 2 coats of Hammerrite, you have to do the second coat 8 - 16 hours after the first.

Only thing I'd add is if painting them in situ, don't just slap paint over the brake pipes as some MOT testers may fail yer motor as they can't see the condition of the pipes!

Take it your a shot blasting chap then??? Thanks for letting me know you can do it but its a bit of a trek for me from the midlands. The front axel is as cleaned up as I can get it with the wire brush in angle grinder method. The little bits of rust in the corners thats left were going to get a dose of that rust gel stuff that turns it black before painting starts. That is unless there's another way that some one knows. Will just mention what I spotted on ebay... "Sandblaster" when you look at the listing its basicaly a waxoyl gun but without the 1lt container. Stick pickup pipe in sand and go. I know its not going to be as good as a proper blaster but has anyone tryed this method who would like to share the results?
