Hi All I was having new tyre's (Pirelli Scorpion Zero ) fitted to my Rangie last week when the tyre fitter said your front wheel bearing was shot then with things playing on my mind it felt terrible to drive so I went about changing it after a few hours of banging and slamming job done but it still feels all over the place I have had it checked by my mot tester and he said all joints are fine going to get it four wheel aligned 2moz. any idear's????

Had the same sort of problem, tram-lining I think it is called. Got the steering and suspension bushes checked, wheel alignment checked and adjusted, tyre pressures corrected (according to the book) and it still seems to tramline a bit. My neighbour has a Mitsubishi Shogun with wide tyres and reports the same sort of problem. Must admit all wheel alignment seems to have helped.

The joints may be fine but often overlooked is the steering damper. Quite easy to see at the front running across from the track rod to a fixed point. Disconnect it at one end and push it in and out. Should be quite resistant. (It could even be missing). Next on the list is the steering box internals. Do you have quite a bit of play in the steering wheel when the engine is off and steering unlocked?

Thanks HL. I will have a look at these later today.

Mine are Goodyear Wranglers. Tried various tyre pressures, had wheels tracked, had all the steering and suspension bushes checked. Just checked for play in the steering box so next thing to look at is the steering damper. It was only MOTd in October so one would expect that to be okay.

What part of an MOT checks the steering damper for correct function? They look for oil leaks from it that is it, function is not checked.

A very small amount of play in the drag link was what caused mine to wander. It's on goodyear Wranglers.

I had pirreli scorpions fitted and one only lasted 6 months and got a blister and i was in Skopje and i could not get pirrelis so i got 2 new Hankooks and the handling improved and so did the ride olso the other pirelli looks almost worn out in the center and also when i got a puncture i had to put on the pirelli from the spare .That lasted 6000 miles before the sidewall went . that was in Turkey so i havnt got the tyre to take back to the fitters but i do have Photos.
Guess i wont be getting stung by any more Scorpions.

Not being an MOT tester I aint got a clue on what is included in the MOT. I know that it seems to get more difficult(& expensive) every year which is why I take my vehicle to my local landy specialist for MOT and annual major service. Going to take one end of the damper off tomorrow and see what the pressure is like. Just want to find out what makes the bugger tram line and get it sorted.

many thanks guys just had wheel alignment checked at ATS and he said it was spot on minus 2!!!! dont feel so bad today maybe just me being paranoid

They don't like Pirelli Zero's? Seen other threads commenting on this.

very little free play

Don't have my owner's handbook on me but do remember reading about something in the steering column that needs to be replaced after 10 years. Bet very few have had it done though (I haven't!).

Checked it - New steering damper ordered!

Mine wanders a bit too, especially in lane 1 on the motorways with the ruts but on lumpy roads in the Highlands as well. Also fitted with Goodyear Wranglers. I'll be trying something else next time.
