Hi all,

I have searched the site and can't seem to find the answer to my problem.

I have a 2000 P38 4.0 HSE and earlier this week, I went to work. Once there I opened the tailgate as usual, sat on the lower part to reach into the boot and noticed that the offside (drivers) rubber hinge had come away from the tailgate.

Upon closer inspection I saw that the bolt was completely rusty and basically turned to rust dust and had disintegrated.

My question is do I need a complete new tailgate or can I buy the bolt as a spare?

The other side does not seem to be as bad as metal is still visible, not just rust!

I would appreciate any advice.

Thank You

Stef

Had the very same problem when we got the P38. If its the check strap you mean, one whole thing was completely missing. Got one at a breakers for next to nothing and fitted it. Then realised they are made up of umpteen bits. Rubber ends, slides, washers, the bolts and metal rope. Dismantled and cleaned up the old one and both are now fine. If it's just your bolt that's gone, hopefully you can get the threaded end out of the tailgate. The problem with the bolts is the 10mm hex head combined with the disproportionately big diameter thread shank. (From memory its 8mm x 1.25) A bit of careful drilling then re-tapping the hole to the right size should see to it then screw in the new one. (Fill the rubber end cap with grease to prevent the same thing happening again.)
