I am wanting to fit a "performance " exhaust to my 1997 Range Rover 4.0 auto. Any advice, tips, pointers etc would be appreciated.

I put a Janspeed cat back system on mine. Sounds perfect, no drone at motorway speeds but a nice thrum tootling about & a big bark when you kick-down.
The rear bumper valence needs a bit of trimming on this system.

When my Janspeed cat-back system went 6 years ago on the idle speed went up to 2000rpm for a couple of for a minutes or so till the ECU sorted its self out, then it went back to normal, the engine now spins up quicker that's for sure.

I'd stick with standard personally assuming 10 to 15 years life is enough.

I had a Rimmer Bros s/s on a defender 50th v8, burbled lovely and not too loud.

But if you want to spend on performance, spend on a cam

i had a rimmer bros s/s cat back, nice rumble at low RPM and nice sound at high rpm not to loud

looked nice too

I had a straight thru on a 90 v8 once. When it had completely smashed my head to bits , I put a proper system back on and swore it pulled better

I have a full stainless exhaust on mine with the quad tail pipes. The centre box got damaged so I replaced it with a straight through section and it sounds awesome now but not intrusive in the cab at motorway cruising speed
