I have a Manual P38, which is difficult to get into 3rd gear.

Finding the problem was easy. One of the springs which hold the gearstick centralised (so that it is positioned to go into 3rd/4th when you let it go) is faulty.

Now the difficult bit. It has a type "D" selector system, and you can only buy the whole unit from Landrover (£650 ish).

I only want the spring, which is a length of threaded rod, about 25 mm diameter, and about 30 mm long, which has a screwdriver slot in one end, and a domed piston on the other, with the spring inside the unit.

Can anyone help, or does anyone have a spare I could buy?

Thanks

you can buy the bias detents from ashcrofts ,they where cheaper but cant remember where i used to get them

Thanks to both of you for your swift responces. I have ordered the offending bits from Ashcrofts - where you both directed me.

They were £65 for the pair though! Well I am fed up of fighting to get it into third - so it is spent.

The ball spring things that sit each side and keep the stick central. Sod to get out though.

It is Francisco who has the issue in Setubal. That's Portugal, I think. South of Lisbon. Nice drive, I guess.

We do have some members down there. Spiggy Topes is closest, I think.

Think it was Trevor that had the original problem but re-reading his post I think it's an earlier type of gear change mechanism than I have.
