2001 4.0L. Has had a very occasional hard brake pedal. I initially replaced the accumulator, then tried a used abs pump but the problem would still reappear. Took it off the road this spring to get a long list of small jobs done. Rear brake lines had been replaced at some point, but as they looked rather clumsily done ( very polite ). I thought I would re-do them. Very glad I did, as some of the flares were dodgy. Top tip - it’s a lot easier to fabricate and fit new rear brake lines with the abs module and steering linkage removed. With the abs module out, I thought i would check it over and see if I could find anything wrong with it. Disassembly not too hard ( lots of photos taken, and measurements made ). I found one of the piston seals damaged so I replaced all of them, cleaned out the internal filter and also cleaned out the brake fluid reservoir. Re-assembly was fairly easy. Brakes were bled according to rave and then tested. I have driven about 100 miles so far with no hard brake pedal! Then again the p38 may be messing with my mind and it may suddenly appear again ( I hope not ).
