Hi, I've managed to break the crankshaft on the original turbo intercooled 1996 2.5 liters diesel BMW M51 engine and recently swapped it to an used M51 pulled out of an Opel Omega 1999.
Except for the turbocharger everything else fits nicely. Since the donor engine came with the FIP installed and after making sure the Bosch serial number was 460 406 994 as it reads on the original injection pump, I've installed the donor engine with its original FIP on it. The electronic connector externally looked identical so I took the risk and connected it as is to the engine loom.
Everything worked nicely except that the readings were off in terms of fuel quantity, timing and fuel temperature. After adjusting the timing and fuel quantity the engine responded well in almost all conditions except for the situation when the revolutions reached the 950 - 1000 RPM range. At that RPM the entire engine shakes quite strongly.
I tried to readjust the injection values for quantity and timing but without too much success.
I still have the original FIP from the dead engine. I will probably try to port it to the donor and see if the problem persists.
I was hoping that someone reading this might share a similar experience and hopefully has a way to fix it.

As I understand it, the FIP from an Opel or BMW has different electronics to the P38 one, Wammers could confirm when he gets out of bed.

I think the Omegas came with about 3 different pumps, ending 993, 994 and 995? Range Rovers only came with 994 and BMWs with another one. Think the same pump went on some VWs too. I was under the impression that as long as the pump has the same number (994) in this case it should be OK? Obviously not!

I think it is only the electronics part of the pump that needs changing but if the pump was good on the old one then probably safer to just switch the lot if the donor is suspect. Be interesting to see how you get on.
