I had a but of a strange one today bought a new in tank pump ready to fit as I was having the old trouble starting when fuel level is low. Starting off by tryin to siphon out the diesel in the tank tried this a few time with different hoses but no real luck. Went to start the car and now it start no problem at all. Is there a possibility that me poking around with the hose on the tank has got the pump working again or is it just coincidence?

Could be you have algae (can't spell that!) growth in the tank. If your tank is rarely full condensation occurs in winter which mixes with the diesel and then you get this black slime algae forming which blocks the inlet strainer. Common problem on boats. Stirring things up with the siphon pipe may have temporarily cleared it. Have a look at the fuel filter and see if there is any trace of black slime. If there is get some algaecide and treat the the fuel tank to get rid of the problem.
