Has anyone done this and if so who is best a plug in/remap/new chip? Does it really improve torque as all the advests say?

In answer to your first question, just about everyone has chipped their DSE with at least a plug in, many have gone down the full blown Jeremy Fearn route. If you don't think your P38 is slow then it probably has been chipped already.

Does it improve torque? Oh yeah!

Economy? The subject of much debate and disbelief. IMHO yes economy can be improved.

Downsides? Plug-ins will likely contribute to the early demise of your head gasket (and your wallet :p ) if you continuously can it, no downside with normal driving.

I can't imagine driving my DSE without the chip. Its just soooo slow.

There was a post here a few weeks ago by a guy who was complaining that the P38 he was after buying was not running well. Suspected his ECU was faulty, pulled out the ECU to find it had been remapped which wasn't going down very well with the Powerbox plug-in also fitted!! Removed the plug-in and all was well.

I had a customers doozel rangie done by superchips and he loves it, its been going strong for 3 years now with no ill effects and he thrashes it regularly from dumfries to italy and he says the economy/driveability is so much better than it was

Oii!!! Landy!

Get the Fook out of my computer :mil36:

And I flippin hate Vista :ballchain:

Like you considering chipping mine '98 DSE Manual. How slow is your when its cold? Mine wont even full itself up the slightest incline for about the first 10 mins!!! When warm its goes quite well. Anyone any idea what could be causing this? It cant be normal!!!!!?????

Must agree 100% with Spud. I wouldn't want a DSE w/o a chip.

But it's usually not the head gaskets that die, its the heads. Crack between the valve seats and prechamber allowing combustion pressure to enter the cooling passages and emptying the cooling system w/in seconds either through the pressure cap or by splitting the radiator.

I look at my head as a maintenance item. Must be replaced around 150kkm's. It is worth it.

Evening,

I recently had my 2001 DHSE remapped....

This should have been any easy task apparently, however it wasn't, long story short needed an actual chip in the ECU not just a remap.

Apparently got about 50ish BHP & about 70 of the torques....result is about 5MPG more if wearing socks and about 1-2MPG more if i fancy leaving a few VTR's or GTI's in a pile of Diesel Dust!!!!

I think u should go for it, wish i would have done Superchips thou, probably better customer service.........!!!

Cya!!

Well I had exactly the same problem as you and after investigation it turned out to be the Needle Lift Sensor which was £276.12 just for the part.
The problem is that it is an intermittent fault so the fault code will not always show up on the Main Dealers computer when it is plugged in. They have to keep testing and retesting from cold. They will get there eventually.

I've got 2 diesel P38's yeah I know I'm mad but one is my spares stock, I also have 2 mates with diesel P38's, they are all a bit gutless when cold. If it's any consolation, my Transit is the same:(

Hi there,
I've just fitted a plug in chip on my 2.5 DSE and it made a huge difference. I got it from Diesel Bob's cost £280 and took about 20 mins to fit. If yours wont cruise at 75 mph going up a slight incline now it will with a chip fitted! Money well spent...:D
