The poor performance fault on my Range Rover i thort was engine / fuel related is now a suspect auto gearbox problem, it does not change up into top gear, is there any common reason for this....or should i just break it for parts
( P38 2.5 dse auto 1996 )

whats been your prob, mine popped a gearbox fault up today, but you have me worried as i been feeling like my truck is sluggish around 45-50 and i have to give it plenty of boot once its in top gear to get it to pull.

There is no fault lights on, when i drive it slow, around car parks etc its fine, but on the road its slow to change up and wont go into top gear ( possibly the last two gears !) it just does not seem right.

Is the gearbox ecu coded to the vehicle, or is it somthing i can get second hand and just plug in..( any idear where its located )

before you scrap it or spend hundreds on an ecu, have you tried an autobox fluid and filter change? can work wonders when the box is playing up and is alot cheaper than just replacing parts in the hope that it cures it:rolleyes:

Definately worth a go - filter kits can be found on ebay for about £20, then get yourself some fluid and crack on - amazing the difference it makes.

do a gearbox fluid and filter change,i used lucas atf and this made one hell of a difference to how my auto box changed up and down the gears, also it is now as smooth as silk when changing up and down.i got my atf of ebay,if you want the details just get in touch.;);)

Sounds like a sticky govenor. Can be helped by changing fluid and filter. But not always. You could try changing filter and fluid, running car for a couple of weeks, then changing fluid again. Keep changing fluid until it is absolutly clean. As there is always 4 litres or so fluid left in you cannot drain.

i have come across a motor and the leds under the gear position were not lighting up and it was stuck in third gear carried out a ecu test found no comms but tested all the wiring and it was a fault in the becm not allowing comms though did find the gear position switch fault as the engine and display take signals before the becm and gearboc ecu fitted new switch £290 set it faults with lights cleared and all was well.

early warning of switch faults are non dip of mirrors in reverse and sluggish changes
get ecu read

I had similar problem with gearbox and changing of gears, at the end it was the Kick back cable that stretched. Fixed it and seems to be fine now...
