Sounds like friction plates have a rattle or maybe your flex plate if it rattles in nuetral and when you put it in drive it goes quieter more than Likely flex plate
Looking back, mine had a similar rattle, turned out to be one of the under floor heat shields had come adrift.

Mines been doing it for a year now I have done the rattle from the flex plate but I have the exact symptoms as yours in the rev range mine does it just before 3000 and there after at the same revs for each change until lock up.
I put it down to worn friction plates I'm not having box off again I've cured the rattle from flex plate. mine isn't slipping so I'm going to wait for it to totally go then get box recon
I have done oil and filter change and in time a another oil change , still comes out red .Yeah , i am hoping it is not anything like that but if it is then i will have to deal with it. When i did the auto box oil / filter change the oil that came out was very clean really and i know the guy i got it from had not done a change in about 8 months going by the service documents .
Will check it over again today and if noise continues then may have to do the same as you ,lol. Would that Lucas Tranny fix help i wounder .
The rattle was only present cold, as it warmed up with heat from the exhaust it stopped.
I know the problem. Just finalised the costs with Ashcrofts for mine and it's started working perfectly again:doh: I don't want to spend on replacement if I don't have to, being a pensioner I don't really have the cash to spare.Ok mine was that loose not even heat would stop the shield rattlin I have jammed that with a wedge so I know its not that I been to Ashcroft for him to check it diagnosis rattle in plates .
You see a box off and on is around the £400 mark with a TQ costing £150 that's a lot of money not even having the box recon so I thought it was better to have box off TQ and recon all together dont want to have box of twice waste of money.

Might go the route of a second hand HP24 and graft that in. My only concern is the weight of the lump, getting the box out does not look easy.
A pit and a 2 stage multi tilt transmission jack. Transfer box will have to come off anyhow to fit to the replacement.Everyone says take the transfer box off to reduce wieght but I think that's just more work and I don't like splitting joints For no reason I would recommend a garage becuase of the special jack and the ease or realigning the box so much easyer with the jack that can raise and tilt at the same time .it easy if it in the air but crawling about on the floor it isn't but you got a pit haven't you luck man
