I am considering buying a second low mileage Range Rover to use on high days.

I am unsure if I should buy the very best of the P38s or buy a 4.2 SC L322.
Prices are not that different, there is currently a 4.6 P38 30th Anniversary with 50,000 miles for £11,000, for £14,000 there is an early 55,000 mile 4.2 SC.

The P38 is quite old now, but because of that there seems to be known fixes for most issues. That said, the 4.2 has fantastic performance and there doesn't seem to be many issues with the engine.

Which would you buy and why?

...

This is tempting too...

Who in the world would spend that much on an old P38

Didn't relise they even sold for that sort of money !

Test drive the 4.2 SC and I'm pretty sure you'll make your mind up

Anyone who pays more than £4K for a P38 wants their brains dusted. Even for a low mileage minter - condition and maintenance is more important than mileage with P38s anyway.

The two cars couldn't be more different the only similarity is they have Range Rover on the bonnet.

+1 the sc I was babysitting for a friend was a nippy big beast indeed but thought it would be far more powerful than my 4.4 vogue. sadly not mind blowing difference imo, maybe I was expecting to much but overall far more impressive than any factory p38 varient

think the newer 5.0 SC is more fun :D

well, if I had to say either in mint condition.
but 11k for a p38 is mad unless a H&H. even then I would have think long and hard.
Re the 322, get a super low miler petrol with perfect service history. I prefer the BMW 4.4 to the supercharged car...
enjoy...

There's an H&H on the bay for 8k.
Personally i think more than 6k for anything other than a Linley is madness.
What sort or money you set aside for the L322 repairs would be my question.
