Hey from Athens GREECE everybody. I ended up with a 4.6 P38 1998 model engine in my garage. I want to fit it to my Defender 90. Originally I thought that since I have the motor complete with the ECU and the wiring loom it will be a straight forward job but it seems it can not be done. I heard that there are people in the UK that can "unlock" the stock ECU and make the engine run on a Defender. Is that true?

Thanks a lot for the welcome and your advise. Where do I find this guy?
Do you have his contact details, maybe an email address?

If its from a 1998 car its a Gems EFI system made by Sagem. Its quite acceptable to do away with the circuits of the ecu that control immobilisation in conjunction with the BECM in the Range Rover. But you will need road speed input which came from the ABS ecu and was trimmed by the BECM and fed around various ecu's.Also alot depend on what gearbox you want to use, manual or auto.Quite alot of hassle, doable is it really worth it ? The cheapest easiest way around it is to use a distributor type front cover off a later 3.9 v8 Disco and get an engine loom and ecu off the same car.All nuts and bolts conversion, and there are plenty of them in breakers etc.
If you want to do a really nice job and not go back to having a distributor, the nice thing would be to use all the original GEMS sensors - except the MAF,(Which is a £700 odd part to replace - the cheap ones are rubbish.) which is replaced with a MAP sensor instead.Totally tuneable and none of the security issues, plus you can run it with wideband UEGO oxygen sensors for total control of air/fuel mixture - top of the tree stuff.Their Megajolt ignition system will run off the original crank sensor and use the existing coil packs.
So there are three ways of making it work, the second and third are probably favourite, depends on how much work you want to do and how much money you want to spend.

I do not want to spend any more money. Another good idea will be to exchange my 4.6 with a classic 4.2 that fits directly in there and that will be the end of the story. Seriously that is what I am going to do. I took the decision last night. I will try to find somebody with a good 4.2 and I will give him the 4.6.

for the hassel and worth pointing out that the 4.2 is the worst engine for porus blocks than the 4.6 i would go down the 14cux injection route and the dissy front cover

Sorry but I am quite new with the Rover engines. What is the 14cux injection route and the dissy front cover?

Guys I am still interested for a 4.2 V8 from a classic Range Rover. If anyone is interested or you know somebody that has a 4.2 I am willing to exchange my turn key 4.6 and I will also cover all shipping expenses from Greece to Uk.

Thanks a lot for your reply. I am not interested in a GM unit. I will be more than happy to exchange my 4.6 with a 4.2 from a classic range rover. If you know somebody that is interested please let me know.

send the 4.6 over to me and i will convert it into a dissy spec and supply a loom and ecu which you can drop in better than a 4.2
