Don't assume the worst, the ticking could be a rocker or dirty oil clogging up a valve lifter.
Overheating can be water pump, thermostat or the air bleed needle clogged up in the header tank.
While these engines can be picky, ours still has its original radiator at 146k miles, but hoses and water pump/thermostat were replaced when we fitted the short engine. The bleed needle WAS clogged up, a consequence of poor coolant.
Coolant is another critical thing, you MUST use a compatible coolant to prevent internal corrosion.
