Hi,

Have you had this problem and can you help?

Anyone know what is wrong with my P38 BMW engine 1996 manual.
Symptoms
When flooring accelerator black smoke puthers out
Had the car for 1 year and always had this same problem but this doesn't affect the performance of the vehicle, have you had this problem??

I've been told it could be the air flow meter but no way of knowing unless I replace it.

Any ideas?

I have a 96 2.5 dse that do’s the same. I am told that it’s caused by a build up in the turbo waste gate. When you boot it the waste gate opens and dumps the built up residue in one go. I think this is probably true as if you give it a big boot a second time no huge black cloud.
Try it let me know what you think?

Black smoke when flooring the accelerator is 'normal' and all diesels do it to a greater or lesser degree. It's basic overfuelling caused by a lack of rich air/diesel mix, black smoke is unburnt diesel.

If excessive it means your intake system could be blocked (oil sludge in intercooler, hoses, EGR valve) or the hoses could be collapsed internally.

hi thanx for the reply,the smoke is excessive it does it through every gear aswell.I will try the things you have said and hope it reduces it thanx
 
I may be way off here, but my 2.5 DSE DID used to smoke upon 'booting-it' , but it doesn,t anymore. The ONLY thing i've done is to renew the pump in the tank, I had to as it failed big time, but since changing it, the car is totally different, goes like a rocket, 7 NO smoke!!
The only thing I can think of is that as the pump started to lose pressure/volume, the injector pump was receiving the wrong 'input' of fuel & therefore the injectors HAD to fire differently, so possibly caused the smoking due to incorrect fuelling.
I also believe that these in-tank pumps can gradually fail & get worse over some time, as I've had mine over 3 years & its never run as good as it does now.
