Hi I need to change my clutch in my n reg p38 2.5 dse range rover and i'm looking for any advice you can give me, i've had a quick look under it when i had it on a ramp last, I understand it has a pull clutch and it look's like you can unbolt the gearbox from the bell housing leaving the bell housing attached to the block I don't know if this is to do with changing the chutch or just the way its built,

Also it look's easyer to take the transfer box off the back of the gearbox first before taking the gearbox out is this the best thing to do and is there anything i need to know.

Lastly am i right in thinking it has a dual mass flywheel and should i change it the cars done 150,000 miles and had a rattle from the gearbox area a while ago when sat still at idle i thought it mite be the flywheel also the clutch has been very hot,

If i do change the flywheel can you get recon exchange items or is it land rover only and gonna cost me ££££££

Id be gratefull of any help you lot have been great help before!!!!
 
That's a lot i was thinking something like £250 not nearer 600 ouch I'll keep telling my self the flywheel is ok then ....
 
It might be worth contacting the larger ebay traders (island 4x4 and the like) to see if any have a flywheel sitting on the shelf.
 
My local motor factor quoted me £350 inc VAT for a replacement after market DMF but I don't know the source ! ' Someone in Manchester' was all I could get out of him. Even so a good price compared to L.R...
 
hi. how did you get on with the clutch change then Steve??

My new dmf flywheel and clutch arrived to-day..easy job over a pit, pity I don't have one !! gonna struggle on the floor!
 
It went pretty well, i used a 2 post ramp at work, the transfer box is very heavy, not sure if i would like to do one on the floor but that is what i would of done if i didn't have a ramp to use. let me know if there is any thing else you need to know.

If you're going to pull the gearbox/transfer box, replace the roll pins holding the release fork to the crossshaft, I spend 2 weekends pulling/refitting my gearbox/tranferbox for 1.20p of roll pins..:Cry:

By the way I pulled the gearbox/transferbox as one unit.

I jacked the vehicle up on to 4 car ramps and made a bracket that bolts to the gearbox mounting bolt holes and fitted in the hole on my trolley jack after removing the saddle pad. Provided you're on solid smooth-ish level surface, if you gently pull/lower the gearbox you can carry out a clutch change without any problems...:)

Hi zzr1200, I know its quite an old thread but I am attempting a clutch change and was worried about supporting the gearbox with a jack... You said about taking gearbox and transfer box on a trolley jack, struggling to picture where you attached it, do you mean with the chassis cross member removed? Don't suppose you could sketch out or have a picture? I was worried that the weight of the transfer box would make it topple backwards...

Ok, doing some more research have found a great website with a guy replacing his duel mass fly wheel, which has a picture (quite small) of the use of a trolley jack supporting the whole gearbox / transfer box.

Range Rover P38 2.5 DSE Dual Mass Flywheel problem

He looks to have created an adaptor, however seems to suggest the whole thing can be supported and moved with just the use of the trolley jack... will give this a go...

I need to chang clunch, i don't have a post ramp and i am cosidering to do the job by moving the engine to the front, using the space in front without radiator and fan..
Does any one do this job this way?

You need to look at the DMF if you are doing the clutch If the DMF is slack, change is as the black dust it creates gets into everything.

Not heard of anyone doing that. Have you got a motorbike or scissor jack that you can put under the gearbox and then chock it and pull back on the drive? Or a flat car-park?
